Poker Hand of the Week Setup
We witnessed a very interesting hand on the Poker After Dark Blitz Week, where Dan Bilzerian made a big move at the wrong time, but was it a bad bluff?
As the name “Blitz Week” implies, the latest cash game week at Poker After Dark is hosted by GGPoker Ambassador Dan “Blitz“ Bilzerian.
It features Bill Perkins and his fiancée Lara Sebastian, Star DJ Steve Aoki, David Bell, Mally Mall and former Box champion Chris Eubank Jr.
They are playing 7-max $50/$100 No-Limit Hold’em and Dan Bilzerian is the big winner so far and has David covered at the start of the hand.
Poker Hand of the Week Action
Preflop:
Mally Mall limps in UTG with Q♠T♥ and Dan Bilzerian raises from UTG+1 to $600 holding 7♣4♣. David Bell picks up A♦Q♥ on the button and 3-bets to $1,600. Mall folds and Bilzerian calls. Pot Size: $4,000
Flop:
The flop comes 4♦6♦K♦. Bilzerian checks and Bell surprisingly checks behind, having flopped very decent with the Nut Flush Draw and an overcard. Pot Size: $4,000
Turn:
On the 5♦ turn the flush comes in. Although Bilzerian doesn’t have a Diamond, he decides to represent it with a $1,400 value bet bluff.
David Bell quickly raises to $5,000, but instead of giving up, Dan decides to come back over the top with a min-raise to $10,000. David asks “Is this a min-raise?” before announcing All-In and Dan Bilzerian quickly mucks his hand. Pot Size: $44,550
Poker Hand of the Week Analysis
It always looks bad, when you bluff right into the nuts of your opponent, but that doesn’t necessarily make it a bad play. Remember, aim of this analysis is to answer the question: Was it a bad bluff?
In order to be able to do so, we go through the hand step by step. Preflop Dan Bilzerian decides to isolate the UTG limper with 74s, which is loose, but ok, since he has position on him and Mally Mall has been playing weak-tight so far. David Bell’s 3-bet from the button is pretty standard and I like it against a loose opponent like Bilzerian, while you can also just call against a tight player.
The flop is interesting as David Bell decides to not make a continuation bet and to just check behind with the Nut Flush Draw plus overcard.
This is an unorthodox play, but turns out to be a great decision in this specific case, as it induces big turn bluff by Bilzerian. Only very few players would check behind on the flop as the preflop aggressor having flopped the Nut flush Draw plus overcard. That’s why Dan doesn’t put David on the Nuts on the turn and decides to come back over the top.
Poker Hand of the Week Conclusion
An unorthodox check behind on the flop by preflop aggressor David Bell with the Nut Flush Draw plus overcard pays off big time as it induces a bluff and leads to Dan Bilzerian representing the Nuts, while Bell is holding them.
Nevertheless, wouldn’t have David had the Nuts this probably would have worked as he has to fold a lot of smaller flushes here, so not a bad bluff by Bilzerian just bad timing.
